Donations, Sponsors, and Standing Desk Project
We’ve already volunteered for organizations such as VIDA (Volunteers for Inter-American Development), where we help sort medical supplies such as catheters and electrodes for the sick and injured in South America. We’ve also volunteered for research groups such as Cystic Fibrosis Research Inc. As of 2017, we will begin volunteering at our local hospital as well.
Alongside aiding global organizations, we’d also like to contribute to our school’s learning environment. James Levine, a researcher at Mayo clinic, found that sitting for more than four hours a day can double one’s risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease. This is the same reason for which sitting for long hours on end can decrease your lifespan by more than 50%. This is why we’re planning on implementing this information into our school’s environment.
Obesity is one of America’s largest problems. More than 3 million Americans become obese per year and even children have now begun becoming diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. As Dr. Levine points out, though, it isn’t primarily because of their diets – it’s because of their metabolism and lax lifestyles.
This is a national crisis and resembles the overly idle and obese human population in the famous Disney Pixar movie, Wall-E. However, by just simply standing, we can reduce these risks and avoid such a fate. I myself have tried this and over a course of two months, I lost four pounds. However, once the school year began, those pounds immediately returned. The results are indeed a bit surprising.
In a typical school setting, a student sits from 6 – 7 hours a day. Imagine how much better it’d be if students could actually lose weight while studying – just by standing. That’s why this year, MEDclub is planning on replacing our school desks with standing desks. We’ve raised $137 from school fundraisers, but that isn’t enough. Standing desks can range from $250 to $400.
It’s for this reason that we are requesting a year-long sponsorship / generous donations. With sponsors and donations, we can donate to effective charities and begin promoting a healthier learning environment for both our fellow classmates and teachers alike. Our goal is $9,000 (including tax and shipping). Your generous donation would be very helpful.
